Introduction

The regions around the Zagros mountain range stretch from the Strait of Hormuz, along the coast of the Persian Gulf, all the way to Western Iran. Since Antiquity they are known for the nomadic settlements. Today the area around the Zagros is still inhabited by several (semi-)nomadic groups that are not well-known to outsiders or even to other Iranisants.  During the July Summer school in Paris, we shall offer to young researchers and students of Iranian or Persian studies (or anyone who is interested in this strategic region!) a concise introduction of these nomadic groups during 8 full days:

-          Koroshi (speaking a Balochi dialect), taught by Ms. Maryam Nourzaei (Uppsala University)

-          Qashqai (speaking a Turkic dialect), taught by Dr. Sohrab Dolatkhah (EPHE, Paris)

-          Lori-Bakhtiari (speaking a close sister language of Persian), taught by Ms. Sima Zolfaghari (Leiden University)

-          Kalhor (speaking a southern Kurdish dialect), taught by Mr. Hiwa Asadpour (Goethe University Frankfurt)

For each ethnic group, 2 courses are available: a linguistically oriented course and a cultural-literary one. The teachers are all fluent in Persian and representatives of the ethnic group listed above.

The Summer school will be held at the renowned Institut National des Langues et Cultures Orientales (INaLCO), 2 rue de Lille, during the first 2 weeks of July.

An excursion to the majestic Fontainebleau is planned on Friday, 7 July.

Courses

Prices start at 220 EUR for 2 courses (lunch is included), consisting of a “language” and “culture” part of the chosen nomadic group. Each following course will cost 100 EUR (to a max. of 2). Students who are interested only in the linguistic or cultural part respectively of each ethnic group should indicate this in the form.

The language course of each nomadic group on offer will be focused on acquiring a complete understanding of the grammar during the 2 weeks.

The cultural aspects of these groups are presented in a separate, “culture” course, which consists of 2 parts: the tribal customs & society will be discussed in the first week, whereas an overview of the literary traditions will be introduced in the second week.
